Berger'eh

This gorgeous antique French Bergère chair was formerly gracing the estate of Lady McPherson overlooking South Yarra’s Botanical Gardens.

Over the years it was clear that after adorning perhaps the show lounge, or the master bedroom, it had been slowly relegated through a plethora of other bedrooms in the mansion, to maybe the hallway and finally found it’s way to the sun-room where we found it on auction day.

The original red jacquard fabric was well faded & the chair no longer provided the comfort as the innards sagged over the years of wear & tear. We sometime imagine the years of conversations that this bergère was privy to.

I’ve been pottering around with this beauty on and off for a while now, stripping it back to the frame and rebuilding (almost) to it’s original glory. What you see in the pictures below are the works-in-progress snaps. All that is left, is the vision of a new custodian, some final touches and the all important fabric choice. I was thinking a vintage Japanese kimono around the outside panels.

It is time to promote her back to her rightful place as a “hero chair”.
